Traffic wardens to patrol Highland Perthshire beauty spots this weekend as tourists warned of fines

The road to Schiehallion has been bottlenecked most weekends this summer.
The road to Schiehallion has been bottlenecked most weekends this summer.

Traffic wardens will be sent to patrol Highland Perthshire beauty spots this weekend as tourists continue to abandon cars on rural roads despite new no parking zones.

Residents surrounding the lochs in the region have been left furious over the summer months as dirty campers and hill walkers dumped cars along narrow lanes and verges, blocking roads.

Last month Perth and Kinross Council implemented no parking clearways on nine roads in the region however locals claim a lack of enforcement has seen visitors continue to flout the rules.

The local authority will send patrols to the areas after around 50 cars were dumped on Foss Road near Loch Tummel, prompting Depute First Minister John Swinney to write to the council.

Council blames ‘inconsiderate drivers’ as parking ban brought in on nine rural Perthshire roads

Conservative councillor for Highland Perthshire, John Duff, believes the introduction of patrols is the correct way to combat anti-social behaviour in the area.

“While we want people to come to Highland Perthshire and enjoy what the area has to offer, I welcome the move to take enforcement action against those irresponsible and selfish visitors whose behaviour spoils the safety, amenity and enjoyment of others.

“Police and parking attendants will be on patrol over the weekend to deal with any infringements and have my full support.

“Visitors should take note that the clearway restrictions will be enforced so please don’t let a £60 parking ticket spoil your day.”

The politician claimed his constituents had suffered a barrage of issues in recent months including vandalism, littering, fire-lighting, irresponsible parking and unhygienic toileting.

Following incidents at Loch Tummel last weekend, local businesswoman Jennifer Macintyre feared politicians and the council were only paying “lip service” to the problems.

Furious Highland Perthshire residents call for patrols after dozens of dirty campers descend on beauty spot

The owner of The Stable Loft on Loch Tummel said: “I never saw a single warden or police vehicle all weekend.

“What I did see was terrible parking, large groups exhibiting anti-social and drunken behaviour and many, many fires.”

A Perth and Kinross Council spokesperson said: “We have received reports that there were a number of cars parked in contravention of the restrictions on Foss Road; we will be deploying parking attendants to the area this coming weekend.

“We ask that all motorist respect the restrictions that have been put in place and park responsibly.”
