A Tayside athletics club has scooped two national awards – the first in its more than 70-year history.
Perth Strathtay Harriers’ Alan Erickson won the Scottishathletics Scottish Athletics Club Coach of the Year award, and the club itself was the inaugural winner of the Janice Eaglesham MBE Para-Development Club award.
Chairman, Jim Hunter said: “We are all a bit stunned.
“To be shortlisted for two awards was fantastic for our club but to then win both categories was amazing. We still can’t quite believe it
“I thought we were up against the big boys and we had no chance,” he added.
“It is all about managing to survive in these crazy times, and this will give us such a boost.”
Coach Alan was recognised for his dedication to his squad of sprint athletes, some of whom have excelled at a national level.
He said he wanted to share his honour with his awesome squad of sprinters, the parents and everyone connected with Perth Strathtay Harriers.
“Great things take time,” he said.
The Janice Eaglesham MBE Para-Development Club award was introduced in memory of woman who was a driving force behind the development of disability sport in Scotland, in particular in athletics.
Jim said: “Janice was a very special person who helped us and many other clubs achieve so much.
“The award highlights the work the club does in the community and world of disability sport from grassroots level right the way up to international performance athletes.
“It’s recognition for all the folk who make it happen every single week, even in these extraordinary times.”
