Crieff Road: Plans lodged for new Lidl store in Perth

Plans have been lodged for a new Lidl store in Perth.

The supermarket chain has submitted a planning application for vacant farmland just north of Crieff Road.

The site is close to St Johnstone‘s McDiarmid Park stadium and an existing Tesco store.

The land was formerly part of Newton Farm and there have been several attempts to develop the site over the years.

In 2012 a planning application for a supermarket and petrol station was put forward but later withdrawn.

Three years later, plans for residential and retail development were submitted but never went further than a proposal of application notice.

A further housing plan in 2019 never went further than the initial planning stage.

Lidl already has one store in the city, on Riggs Road, while it also has an outlet in Blairgowrie.

No further details have yet been revealed about the timescales for the potential new store – with the plans still to be considered by the local authority.

Gordon Rafferty, Lidl GB’s regional head of property, said: “We have received an incredible amount of support from the local community and are delighted to announce that we have submitted a planning application to Perth & Kinross Council.

“If granted this would mark a multi-million pound investment in the area, and the creation of new jobs when the store opens.

“We would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their support and feedback so far and look forward to receiving the decision in due course.”

The bid comes just weeks after fellow budget retailer Aldi was granted permission to open a new shop on Necessity Brae.

That will lead to the closure of the existing shop on Glasgow Road.
