The Royal George Hotel in Perth was evacuated on Thursday morning after a fire.

Three appliances from Perth station were scrambled to the scene on Tay Street shortly after 8am following an alert from staff.

Around 20 or 30 guests were evacuated on to the street for a short time before being allowed to return.

The fire is understood to have broken out in the laundry at the hotel.

Guest mindful of New County Hotel fire

John Littlechild, who is visiting from California, told The Courier: “Smoke alarms went off at around 8’olock.

“Everyone came out and the fire service came out. We didn’t smell any smoke. Trust me, we’d have got out quicker if we’d smelled smoke.”

Mr Littlechild said he had the recent fire at the New County Hotel in Perth in mind as he evacuated.

Ruth Littlejohn added: “We all just evacuated. The hotel staff were very efficient.”

Another witness said: “We heard the alarms and we got straight out. We didn’t see or smell any smoke either. The fire service got here quick”

Fire service confirm casualty in Royal George hotel fire

A spokesperson for Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 8.10am on Thursday to reports of a small fire at a hotel on Tay Street, Perth.

“Operations control mobilised four appliances to the scene to make the area safe.

“One female casualty suffering smoke inhalation was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.”

George Street was closed while fire and ambulance crews attended the scene.

Hotel owner Eddie Anderson said there was no fire and alarms were set off by a “smouldering cloth”.

He said: “We had a fault in the sensor due to a bit of smoke caused by a smouldering cloth.

“However, there was no fire, at all.

“We are very fire conscious and the staff did their job properly.

“After the County Hotel fire, we are very wary of any incidents and we take the health and safety of our guests extremely seriously.

“The fire service was happy with our systems.”
