Montrose boss Paul Hegarty takes “full responsibility” as team faces six-pointer

Montrose manager Paul Hegarty has said he takes “full responsibility” for his team facing a six-pointer so early in the season.

The Gable Endies travel to Meadowbank to face League Two newcomers Edinburgh City and it will be a case of bottom club hosting second bottom side.

Montrose are just a point better off than City in the table, with just two points from five games compared to the capital team’s single point.

Hegarty admits that is nowhere near good enough and is demanding better from his players today as they try to put some clear, blue water between themselves and Edinburgh.

“This is a six-pointer already for us,” said the Links Park boss.

“The results have been very poor and our league position isn’t good enough.

“I take full responsibility for that.

“We just have not done as well as we would have expected with a squad that I consider to be the strongest in my time here.

“We have been losing by the odd goal and did so again last weekend against Cowdenbeath but the fans don’t want to hear that.

“They want to see us winning and there are no excuses.

“We took the lead just before half-time last Saturday but then lost a goal almost right away through poor defending.

“They scored again and that left us chasing the game.

“I guess you can be positive and say that if we win this match then we can get away from Edinburgh City but it will be a tough game.

“We have had them watched, as usual, and they will be confident after drawing with Stirling Albion.”

Meanwhile, Montrose have announced a double sponsorship deal with local electrical contractor WM Mustard & Son Ltd.

Not only has the firm taken the advertising slots on the back of the home and away shirts, they have also become the first-ever sponsor of the club’s mascot Monty Mole.
