A heroic second half comeback has saved Cowdenbeath’s SPFL status.
The Central Park club were staring Lowland League football in the face when they were behind at half-time but a much improved performance after the break saw them win the pyramid play-off for a second year in a row.
The Fife side got off to the perfect start when Harvey Swann scored a sixth minute penalty after Robbie Buchanan was tripped in the box.
Instead of disheartening the visitors, though, it spurred them on and they were level four minutes later when Cowdenbeath failed to deal with a long throw and Mitch Megginson finished from close range.
The former Brechin man made it 2-1 midway through the first half and Gary Bollan’s men would have been grateful to go into the break just one down given the territorial dominance Cove enjoyed.
Whatever team talk Bollan came up with at half-time, it had the desired effect as it was 2-2 on 50 minutes when a Swann free-kick which was meant as a near post cross, found its way past keeper Stuart McKenzie.
Then on 71 minutes the Fifers were 3-2 in front. A collision between the Cove goalie and Cowden striker Jordyn Sheerin left Brad Smith with an empty net to shoot at – albeit from around 30 yards out – and he made no mistake.
Frustrations boiled over in a heated end to the game, with no fewer than three red cards handed out to Cove players and both managers ordered off.
