IAN ROACHE: It’s a bold prediction but Dundee will finish best of the rest in Championship

The Dundee players celebrate Kane Hemmings' second strike.
The Dundee players celebrate Kane Hemmings' second strike.

It was almost a relief to see Dundee win so comfortably against Partick on Saturday.

It had been a while so this confident and composed display was extremely welcome.

There had even been bleak talk – maybe not inside Dens, mind you – about dropping down into the relegation zone if the winless streak went on much longer.

This result provided proof that when the Dark Blues click they can look like the best of the rest in the Championship.

It is a bold prediction but I tip them to be exactly that and finish as runners-up behind champions-in-waiting Dundee United.

That is not based solely on one very good performance against a dismal Thistle team and they have suffered more than their fair share of injuries, with poor Ross Callachan the latest in a long line.

There is just a feeling now that James McPake’s team have tried, trusted and experienced players in key areas – Christophe Berra, Graham Dorrans, Paul McGowan and Kane Hemmings to name but a few – who will guide them into second spot.

This theory will be put to the test next away to Queen of the South on the 22nd but Dundee should head to Dumfries with confidence.

Let’s be honest, they have flattered to deceive all too often this season so they owe it to themselves as well as to the supporters to finish the campaign with a flourish.
