Dundee manager Paul Hartley admitted his side “won ugly” after overcoming Inverness to move into seventh place in the Premiership.

Hartley, whose team prevailed through goals from Craig Wighton and Kostadin Gadzhalov, was full of praise for the work rate of his players as they earned their 2-1 success.

He said: “We’re very happy because I didn’t think we played great. I’m happy with the team, the effort and the attitude. It was first class.

“Sometimes you have to win ugly and this was one such occasion. I think that was an ugly kind of win for us.

“We’re really pleased with another three points at home and we’ve got a run of games coming up where we’ll take it one game at a time.

“We’ve moved off the bottom which is important for us in terms of the confidence.”

Inverness manager Richie Foran refused to slate his players for their Dens Park defeat.

Foran said: “That was just unbelievable. It was our best performance of the season.

“I actually went round the dressing room and shook all their hands after the game.

“We had all the possession and dominated from start to finish but still lost a game of football.

“We had so many chances to score and could have had four or five today and then they go and score against the run of play.

“I’ve told the lads I’m delighted with all their performances but not to take it the wrong way – I’m obviously not happy with the result or the first goal against us.”
