Dundee comebacks: Rare times the Dark Blues roared back from two down to win – and what happened next

Any team coming back from two goals down is a rarity and something to be wholeheartedly enjoyed by supporters.

For Dundee, it’s almost unheard of.

In fact, Saturday’s fightback at Firhill which saw Gary Bowyer’s Dark Blues trail 2-0 at half-time but come out at full-time as 3-2 winners has only happened once before this century.

That brought the 2009 Challenge Cup success.

This one was a bit different, a result that could very well spark an up-and-down Championship campaign into life.

Today Courier Sport took a look back through the history books to find the most recent times Dundee have won after trailing by two goals – and what happened next.

Dundee 3-2 Dunfermline – March 27, 2021

The last time this feat was achieved wasn’t so long ago.

But it did arrive in a wholly different time for the beautiful game in the midst of a global pandemic.

There were no fans in the stands to see the quality of Dunfermline’s second goal as former Dee favourite Craig Wighton netted a sumptuous lob.

The Pars were two up inside six minutes and it looked like a long night for James McPake’s Dundee.

Jason Cummings, though, halved the deficit on the half-hour and it was game on again.

Then came a second-half flurry with Danny Mullen and Lee Ashcroft swiftly putting the home side in front with two goals in two minutes.

It proved crucial, too. Dundee kept up their impressive form at the tail-end of the season and nipped into second spot on the final day of the campaign.

Then came play-off delight and a place in the Premiership.

Dundee 3-2 Hearts – December 23, 2016

Greg Stewart and Kane Hemmings had departed in the summer and Paul Hartley’s Dee were struggling in the top flight.

They had not long got past a 10-game winless streak that saw six defeats on the bounce.

It was a season with little to shout about but the Dens Park crowd certainly got their money’s worth just before Christmas.

Jamie Walker and Callum Paterson had netted to put the Jambos in control after 48 minutes and the Dark Blues were staring at yet another defeat.

However, skipper Darren O’Dea thought otherwise as he found the net with his right foot before Paul McGowan levelled things on 71 minutes.

There was more drama to come, however, as a Tom Hateley free-kick was headed in by a combination of Canadian striker Marcus Haber and Paterson in stoppage time.

Just days later Dundee lost at Partick Thistle before another poor run of form saw Paul Hartley replaced by interim boss Neil McCann, who kept them in the division.

Dundee 3-2 Inverness Caledonian Thistle – November 22, 2009

A regular league game is a fine setting for a major comeback but there’s no beating a cup final to grab victory from the jaws of defeat.

The last time Dundee came from 2-0 down at half-time came almost 13 years ago in the Challenge Cup Final.

The club have also never lifted a cup since.

That season these two sides would be battling it out at the top of the First Division. It was Inverness who eventually won the title but the Dark Blues got some bragging rights in early in the season.

Jonny Hayes set up Adam Rooney before Nauris Bulvitis put Terry Butcher’s Caley Thistle 2-0 up heading into the break at McDiarmid Park.

Latvian left-back Bulvitis then put one in the other net after the break to give Jocky Scott’s side a lifeline.

Gary Harkins followed up a Craig Forsyth cross after it came back off Ryan Esson in the Caley goal before the two Dees reversed roles with Harkins setting up Forsyth for the winner.

Dougie Imrie would see red late on for Thistle.

That victory catapulted Dundee into red-hot form, winning the next four league games on the bounce.

Things would tail off late in the season, though, and Jocky was sacked in March before being replaced by Gordon Chisholm.

Dundee would finish in second place, 12 points behind Inverness in top spot.
