Dundee United boss Robbie Neilson is expecting new signing Aidan Nesbitt to be a big hit in the Championship.
The 21-year-old former Celtic Academy Player of the Year made his debut from the bench in Saturday’s clash with Partick Thistle, just hours after signing a short-term deal until the end of the season.
That late arrival and a lack of game time this season didn’t prevent the striker impressing and winning the second-half penalty that earned the Tangerines a draw.
Robbie, who also signed Nesbitt for MK Dons, was pleased with his overall display and believes he can get goals to help United to promotion.
“He brought exactly what I wanted. Having been in this league for a few months now, I realise that it’s an open game,” Robbie said.
“You need people that can find a space in that game and make things happen. He always wants to get facing the opposition goal, which means that the strikers move, the wide men move. I was really pleased with his debut.”
With Osman Sow and Cammy Smith being strongly linked with moves to Tannadice, the signings look set to continue this week.
And the manager is also in the market for a defensive midfield player as well as possibly another central defender.
Meanwhile, Robbie has clarified his comments after the recent shock defeat at Alloa when he labelled his side as “not good enough” to go up.
“My comments after the match weren’t focused on the team on the pitch.
“The issue we have is that we have people who aren’t pushing to get into the first team.
“They are happy to sit and not help the club out.”
