Defiant Darren Dods insists Brechin will not go down without a fight

Darren Dods.
Darren Dods.

Brechin will have to do something they have failed to achieve all season in the Championship when they travel to face Morton this afternoon – otherwise they will be officially relegated.

Darren Dods’ plucky part-timers lost once more on Tuesday night, going down 3-0 against Dunfermline at the Glebe.

That result means that if they do not finally get three points on the board at Cappielow, they will be consigned to the drop.

Dods is determined that will not happen without a fight but even if the worst-case scenario is confirmed today, he insists there will still be plenty to play for in the remaining games of the season.

The Glebe gaffer said: “We actually started on the front foot against Dunfermline but they scored from their first attack.

“Then straight from the kick-off we conceded again in just eight seconds.

“It was a hammer blow and something that has never happened in my time at the club but it gave us a mountain to climb.

“It would have been easy for the heads to go down but the lads kept battling away however it wasn’t to be with the Pars scoring their third.

“Midweek games against full-time sides are always tricky for us.

“Dunfermline would have been able to get their players in on Sunday and Monday and then arrived fresh for the game against us.

“However, most of our boys had been working Tuesday and some of them didn’t arrive at the ground from Edinburgh and Glasgow until five to seven.

“Don’t get me wrong, sometimes that worked to our advantage in League 1 but it is a different proposition against full-time teams.”

Dods added: “The fact remains we didn’t get the result and we all know what can happen if we lose again against Morton on Saturday.

“We would rather it happened later rather than sooner so we will just have to battle hard and try to finally get that elusive win.

“We knew it would be tough in the Championship but we should have picked up more points than we have done. That has been the disappointing thing.

“We just have to try to finish the eight games remaining as positively as possible with some of the lads playing for contracts for next season.

“We did really well to get into the Championship and we will look to enjoy the rest of our time in it when there is no pressure on us.”

Brechin’s task against a Morton side chasing a promotion play-off spot has not been made any easier with injuries to key players.

Dods said: “It has been confirmed that Craig Storie has damaged his medial ligament and is looking at eight weeks out while Andy Jackson has suffered a setback with his groin problem and will miss the rest of the season.

“That just about sums up the bad luck we have had this season with injuries.

“We also have Kosta Gadzhalov missing along with Ryan McGeever.”
