St Johnstone’s Pittodrie point deserves praise rather than to be viewed as “negative football”, according to manager Tommy Wright.
The draw might not have had goals but it was a “great team performance” as far as Wright was concerned.
The Perth boss, who revealed that Danny Swanson should be available for Saturday’s clash with Motherwell, said: “It was another great away point.
“There wasn’t a lot of goalmouth action but we did very well in terms of preventing a team with so many attacking players create much in the way of chances.
“They were on a high after scoring five against Kilmarnock so that shows how well our players worked to keep our shape.
“Both teams were trying to win the game and while chances were at a premium we always looked a threat.
“It was intriguing from a tactical point of view and I thought Aberdeen defended well.
“If Celtic prevented Man City and Barcelona scoring in the Champions League they’d rightly deserve praise for it.
“Teams in the English Premiership get praise lavished on them when they work hard to keep bigger clubs at bay.
“Do it here in Scotland and it seems to be regarded as negative football. But it’s not. There are two sides to the game. You have to work hard to stop the opposition and we did that in Aberdeen.”
Wright added: “If anyone thought we were going to go up there and allow them wave after wave of attack and get a real doing they are living on a different planet.
“I was delighted with our performance and the players deserve a lot of credit. There were some very good individual performances.
“But ultimately it was a great team performance that got us a point at a stadium where only Celtic have won this season.
“We have taken points at Tynecastle and Ibrox and could have won at both places. And we could have sneaked all three on Saturday.”
