How best to describe St Johnstone performance on Saturday? Brutal, criminal, horrible, diabolical – not my words but Tommy Wright’s.
The McDiarmid boss certainly did not pull his punches after the Kilmarnock game with the first half in particular receiving the withering assessment of being, “The worst 45 minutes I have seen probably in my career let alone the last five or six years I have been here.”
Personally, I am also really struggling to recall Saints ever playing so badly in recent times.
At a push, Joe Shaughnessy and Richard Foster gained pass marks but St Johnstone were second best all over the park.
It was all the more galling for the home support as the team had secured another good win on the road last week up in Dingwall.
So to surrender so tamely at McDiarmid against a Killie side who had only won once in their last 11 games was an enormous disappointment.
Wright cancelled all leave and had the players back in yesterday to go over what went wrong and I am sure watching the game back would have been a video nasty for them.
The funny thing is, knowing this Saints squad, I would not be surprised if they went to Ibrox on Wednesday night and took something from the game against Rangers.
However, what is certain, is that Wright and his players have to find a way to secure more home comfort between now and the end of the season, especially against teams they are expected to beat.
