Long delays as tanker crashes off A90 in Angus and lands in ditch

The stricken tanker.
The stricken tanker.

The A90 Forfar by-pass was partially closed after a tanker left the road and toppled into a ditch on Friday morning.

A large turnout of emergency services, including four Scottish Fire and Rescue Service pumps and a search and rescue unit, attended the incident at around 11.30am on Friday.

The lorry driver’s condition is not known at this stage but the accident led to major delays for southbound traffic on the Aberdeen to Dundee dual carriageway.

Emergency services at the scene.

The crash happened in a section of contraflow just past the A94 McDonalds junction and it is believed the tanker veered off the road in a 30 miles per hour section of roadworks before topping into undergrowth.

Fire crews from Forfar, Kirriemuir and Dundee’s Macalpine Road stations attended the scene, along with police and the Scottish Ambulance Service.

Southbound traffic was diverted off the road at the nearby A94 slip and put through Forfar to rejoin the road at Lochlands.

A SFRS spokesperson said stabilisation equipment and other specialist equipment was used in the incident.

The road reopened at about 2pm.

A Tayside Police Division statement read: “The southbound A90 has now been reopened at Forfar following the earlier RTC.

“It may need to be closed again temporarily at a later point to allow for recovery of the crashed HGV but we have no info as to when that may be. Thanks for your patience.”
