A woman has died following a fall from Arbroath cliffs.
Police Scotland confirmed the tragedy in the wake of a major emergency operation launched shortly after 7pm on Thursday night.
The victim, was recovered from the water north of Victoria Park after the Arbroath all-weather lifeboat Inchcape and inshore craft Robert Fergusson were both tasked as part of the response.
Police, Coastguard and the Scottish Ambulance Service were also at the scene of the incident, north of the town’s Victoria Park.
The woman was picked up by the town lifeboat and transferred to the RNLI station at the harbour.
They were then transferred to an ambulance and rushed to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, but tragically did not survive.
A police spokesman said:Â Police Scotland can confirm that a woman has sadly died after an incident at Arbroath cliffs yesterday evening at around 7.15pm.
“There are no suspicious circumstances and a report has been sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”
A Coastguard spokesman said: “The Arbroath lifeboat and Arbroath in-shore lifeboat were launched, as well as the Carnoustie Coastguard Rescue Team and the Montrose Coastguard Rescue team.
“We were contacted for assistance at 7.40pm.”
A spokesman for Arbroath lifeboat station added: “We were called to attend a casualty, the casualty was rescued and brought back to the lifeboat station and on to an ambulance.”
No further details of the victim have been released at this stage.
