Publican faces probe over Islamophobic comments

Joel Justice was sentenced on Tuesday.
Joel Justice was sentenced on Tuesday.

A Dundee publican may face a council probe after making Islamophobic comments in defence of his son the day after he was sentenced for committing racist abuse.

Maryfield councillor Ken Lynn has vowed to report John Justice, publican of Dundee’s Pillars bar, following hostile comments made by Mr Justice in which he urged people to “boycott Islam”.

Mr Justice’s son, Joel, 25, admitted using racially abusive language to Rifa Nezir and Rehan Khan in Dundee’s Curry Junction on April 29 this year.

Justice entered the Perth Road establishment before launching a racist tirade at the duo.

The 25-year-old told the workers they “treated their women like slaves” and demanded “they go back to their own country”.

He was arrested after his victims called police, but later told social workers he felt he was being made to feel “white guilt”.

He was ordered to carry out 135 hours of unpaid work.

His father has since taken to Facebook to defend his son.

Mr Justice posted: “It is because Muslims are now a protected species: they can blow us up, call for gays to be killed and treat women like s**t.

“We should boycott everything to do with Islam and demand they condemn IS terrorism or we round them up and detain.”

When approached by The Courier at vthe Pillars yesterday, Mr Justice admitted he has “strong views” on the subject.

He said: “I don’t want my kids of grandkids growing up under Sharia law.

“I’m a 70s child and am liberal, but I feel liberalism is dying.

“It’s only recently this has happened. I have strong views on this.”

Mr Justice, who has the mantra “Try to enjoy life and not do wrong to others” promoted on his Facebook page, says he is particularly disgusted Joel received a sentence akin to those who commit violent crime.

He said: “There was a guy who attacked someone with a glass and permanently disfigured them.

“He got a similar sentence. How can that be right?”

Maryfield councillor Ken Lynn said he was “very angry” at the comments made by

Mr Justice and said he would be contacting Dundee City Council’s licensing board in response.

He said: “For a publican to make these comments on a public forum is an utter disgrace.

“Groups like Taught By Muhammad and the Yousuf Youth Initiative do a hell of a lot of good in Dundee.

“I’m not going to ignore this. I’ll be contacting the licensing board about this.”
