A drunken footballer was turfed out of a Montrose nightspot after slapping a woman’s bottom and fighting with door staff.

Liam Bailey, midfielder for Montrose Roselea JFC, appeared in the dock at Forfar Sheriff Court following the fracas at Sharky’s Bar.

The court heard Bailey was “extremely intoxicated” when he attacked a woman, before pummelling a bouncer and refusing to leave.

The 25-year-old, of Ferry Street, Montrose, was originally charged with sexual assault after the incident on January 16.

But he pled guilty to a reduced charge of assaulting the woman by slapping her on the buttock over her clothing.

Bailey further admitted assaulting staff member Gavin McLean.

He repeatedly punched him on the head and kicked him on the body.

The sportsman pled guilty to a third charge of acting in a disorderly manner and refusing or failing to leave the George Street premises when asked by two members of staff.

Drunken nuisance

Solicitor Nick Markowski, defending, said his client had been drinking at the establishment since 5pm.

He was with teammates at the time, having played a game earlier that day.

Things turned sour at about midnight, the court heard.

“He was extremely intoxicated,” said the lawyer.

“He was making a nuisance of himself to other patrons in the club, especially to this one woman.

“He then turned on one of the bouncers and was ejected from the premises.”

Mr Markowski said: “He is now banned from this particular public house.”

The lawyer added: “He is very apologetic.

“By coincidence, he met the woman at a party a few weeks later.

“He spoke to her and apologised to her face.”

Sheriff Jillian Martin-Brown fined Bailey £500.

“I’m pleased you have accepted full responsibility for this,” she said.
