Topless Dundee drunk had to be sedated in hospital after Kirkton allotment rampage

Josh Bray.
Josh Bray.

A rampaging topless Dundee man had to be sedated by hospital staff after hurling masonry at police from inside a locked Kirkton allotment.

Mullet-sporting Josh Bray was brought from HMP Perth to Dundee Sheriff Court to admit a drunken spree and resisting five constables who tried to arrest him.

On May 3, Bray was heard on Ashmore Street in Dundee by a resident.

He was seen just after 1.30pm, topless but wearing tracksuit bottoms.

Bray was heard shouting and swearing before banging on the door and windows of a vacant property next door to the resident.

The 28-year-old was then seen to pick up broken pieces of slab.

Allotment struggle

Police received an anonymous phone call to report Bray and by the time they arrived, he was unconscious inside a locked allotment area nearby.

The allotments were surrounded by anti-climb fencing so police were initially unable to enter to reach Bray but he regained consciousness and became agitated.

Shouting and sweating profusely, despite being half-naked, Bray told police: “F***ing come in here and I’ll f***ing stab you.”

Bray then began brandishing masonry at police, hurling it at the inside of the fence between him and the officers.

This happened more than once and when police did gain entry, he swung the stonework at an officer.

He resisted the five constables trying to apply handcuffs, struggled violently and lashed out with his arms and legs.

Due to his condition, he was checked in an ambulance and taken to Ninewells, where staff had to sedate him.

‘Wasn’t quite in his right mind’

Solicitor Alex Short told Dundee Sheriff Court since being remanded two days after the incident, his client had been offered employment.

“He’s had a long period of time in custody.

“All Mr Bray has to offer is he spent a period of time where he was consuming a lot of alcohol.

“He seemed to be on a bit of a bender.

“For some reason, he did have to be sedated.

“Something clearly was going on that made him behave this way.

“He wasn’t quite in his right mind.”

Sheriff Jillian Martin-Brown told Bray a custodial sentence was “likely” and remanded him further.

She ordered reports ahead of sentencing next month.

Previous offence

In 2018, Bray was jailed for more than three years after spraying a police officer in the face with CS gas before trying to grab for a meat cleaver as the half-blinded constable tried to arrest him.

While behind bars in February 2020 at HMP Perth, Bray was assaulted by a “prison bully” who clubbed him over the head three times with a pool cue.
