Dundee United football chief Tony Asghar has dodged a driving ban after being clocked speeding in his £65,000 Range Rover.

The Tannadice sporting director and former police officer already had six penalty points on his licence when he was ordered to court after being clocked speeding in Fife.

However, he evaded a ban on Monday after Justice of the Peace Janet Hughes added three points to his licence and fined him £120.

She gave him 28 days to pay the fine.

Another three points will attract an automatic ban.

The offence

Fiscal depute Kate Scarborough told Dundee’s Justice of the Peace Court: “It was 11.30am and the road conditions were slightly damp.

“The road conditions were good and the traffic was moderate at the time.

“The speed was detected using a speed gun and the driver was identified.”

JP Hughes said: “Having heard the background I understand you already have six points on your licence.

“Your licence will be endorsed with a further three points.”

Asghar had originally denied the charge and was due to stand trial at the court late last year.

However, he then pled guilty by letter and had been ordered to appear personally for sentence because of his existing record showing six live points.

The retired police officer admitted speeding on the A919 in Fife on February 2 2021.

The Premiership club’s sporting director admitted clocking 45 miles per hour on the St Michael’s to Leuchars road.

The stretch of road in which he was caught has a 30mph limit.

Asghar, 54, of Bearsden, Glasgow, admitted speeding at 50% above the limit on a stretch of the A919 near its junction with the A914.

Asghar, who attended a Manchester university and was involved in sports management after leaving the police, is a senior management figure at the Premiership club.
