Funeral to celebrate the life of “Iron” Mike

Mike Towell.
Mike Towell.

The family of the late Dundee boxer “Iron” Mike Towell have said they will “celebrate his life” at hisĀ funeral serviceĀ on Friday.

Mike Towell, 25, died after collapsing in the ring whileĀ competing in a boxing match in Glasgow at the end of September.

He will be laid to rest thisĀ Friday at St Andrew’s Cathedral in Dundee and his family hope everyone attending the serviceĀ will join them in a “celebration of his life”.

In a statement, they said: “It is the familyā€™s hope that everyone who attends the service does so to celebrate Mikeā€™s life.

ā€œWe will always mourn losing him but we hope everyone takes time to remember the enjoyment and the smiles he brought into their lives.

ā€œAs a sign of this we would ask that no one wears either black or red to the funeral, Mike didnā€™t like the colour red.

ā€œAlso we would request that there be no floral tributes, instead there will be a donation at the Cathedral that will benefit charities close to the hearts of Mike and the family.ā€

A fund set up in the aftermath of the young boxer’s death by boxing legend Ricky Hatton has raised more than Ā£46,000 in aid of Mike’s family.

Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn also confirmed more than Ā£7,400 had been raised for the family from ticket sales at a recent bout between Ricky Burns and Kiryl Relikh.

You can donate to the fund by visiting the justgiving page here.
