A former Dundee nightclub could be demolished to make way for flats and shops.

Plans have been unveiled to build 72 flats on the site of the former Oxygen nightclub on Brown Street.

The proposals include plans for a mix of one and two bedroom flats, as well as workshop and commercial units.

Two public consultation on the proposals are due to be held in January and February.

Brown Street nightclub site to be cleared

A proposal of application notice (PAN) lodged with Dundee City Council offers limited details but says the existing building – the former Oxygen nightclub – would be cleared to make way for the housing development.

In a timeline submitted with the application notice, applicant Mark Beaton Cullross Ltd says it is hoped a full planning application will be submitted in April and approved by September.

Public feedback wanted

Members of the local community are being asked to give feedback on the plans at two consultation events, due to be held at the Hampton Hilton on January 18 and February 15.

The application states: “The pre-planning consultation period will aim to share with the local community the designs which have been developed to date and to explain the rationale in doing so.

“This will allow us to take onboard comments and feedback and present a more detailed proposal at the second public exhibition where further feedback will be sought.

“We recognise the importance and significance of the project to both the neighbours and the wider Dundee City Community and we aim to demonstrate how our designs have been developed to be sympathetic to the neighbourhood.”

1980s heyday

The Brown Street site used to be home to Oxygen nightclub, which in the 1980s was known as Dirty Den’s and before that The Fountain.

When The Fountain opened in November 1983, it was the first club to have lasers as part of the lightshow.

A fire in June 1985 caused extensive damage and completely destroyed the roof.
