Fire at old school on Pitkerro Road

Firefighters attended a blaze at a recently-closed Dundee school on Wednesday night, the second time in the space of a month.

St Vincents RC primary school, which closed in the summer, was the scene of another fire on Wednesday night.

It follows an earlier incident in September, days after Braeview Academy was badly damaged by fire.

Four appliances, an ambulance unit and police rushed to the scene after the alarm was raised shortly before 6.15pm.

Firefighters had to wear breathing apparatus as they searched the building to ensure it was structurally safe and free of people.

Residents nearby remained tight-lipped as to what they might or might not have seen on Wednesday evening, however one neighbour said she had seen the gate to the building open earlier that evening and had reported it.

A spokesperson for Scottish Fire and Rescue said: “Officers attended the scene at around 6.14pm on Wednesday.

“Four appliances – two from Kingsway, one from McAlpine and one from Blackness stations – were in attendance.

“Officers remained at the scene while the building was searched and ventilated.

“Breathing apparatus units and a positive pressure ventilation fan was used to clear the building of smoke.

“The building was searched to ensure it was still structurally sound and to make sure it was empty.

“The stop message was received just before 8pm.”

A 15-year-old boy has been charged in connection with the fire which closed Braeview Academy last month.
