A Dundee cinema will be completely transformed to include a bar, luxury seating and a high-tech new screen before the end of the year.

The Odeon in Douglas is undergoing a face-lift to become one of just 21 “Luxe” movie theatres in the country.

As part of the revamp a wider range of alcohol will become available for cinema-goers from the new Oscar’s Bar, as will hot drinks from a Costa Coffee corner.

Some 903 luxury, reclining seats are being brought into the Odeon across all of its 10 screens.

A high-tech, 45ft-wide iSense screen – boasting 4K projection and Dolby Atmos 3D sound – will be installed during the works allowing for films to be shown in ultra-high definition.

A total of 170 new speakers are being installed at the Odeon’s screens, along with new in-screen lighting and a Dolby Fidelio audio description system for the hearing-impaired.

Updated food and drink options will also become available.

Additionally a mural inspired by the City of Discovery will be created as part of the refurbishment. It will be unveiled on the new-look cinema’s launch day.

Work on the Odeon Luxe is expected to be completed by late November in time for some of the winter’s biggest blockbusters. It will remain cinema open for film fans throughout the refurbishment.

Odeon Luxe Dundee’s general manager Kim Thorne said: “We are so delighted to be celebrating not only the opening of our fantastic new Odeon Luxe Dundee, but also the city’s incredible contribution to the comic book industry, which of course inspired many modern blockbusters.

“We hope all Dundee locals feel a sense of pride as they walk through our doors and see the astounding comic mural inside, and we can’t wait to welcome all of our guests to experience the new Odeon Luxe Dundee.”
