Around 700 runners recreated the famous opening scene from Chariots of Fire as they raced along St Andrews’ West Sands on Sunday.

Vangelis’ iconic theme blasted out as competitors lined up for the annual 5k Chariots of Fire Beach Race.

Most of them were dressed in white and some were barefoot to resemble the characters in the 1981 Oscar-winning film.

And everyone who finished enjoyed one of Fisher and Donaldson’s famous fudge doughnuts and a beer on the sweeping sands.

Participants in the children’s one-mile fun run were rewarded with a Janetta’s ice cream.

Organiser Ben McLeod said: “It’s such a joyous event.

“The atmosphere is very relaxed but there’s also that feeling of anticipation before the race starts.”

Our photographer Steve MacDougall captured some of the action.
