Inspection finds no fault with Elie’s Chain Walk

Elie’s Chain Walk has been inspected by experts after three children had to be rescued on Tuesday afternoon.

It was claimed that a broken chain had caused the children to turn back, only to find their path was blocked by the rising tide.

However Fife Council say there is no evidence to support the claim and that all the chains were intact.

However they urged walkers to use caution while using the route.

Ali Dreyer, the council’s outdoor learning manager said: “We’ve inspected the full length of the chain and are keen to reassure people that it is not broken or damaged.

“It is a challenging activity though so please do follow the safety advice at both ends of the walk.”

Two boys and a girl were rescued from the rocky route by teams from Leven and St Andrews coastguard and lifeboats from Anstruther.

The Chain Walk is a coastal route dating back to at least the 1920s, though the current chains were installed in 2010. The anchor points are drilled around two feet into the rock.

It gained its name from the eight chains which are used as hand and foot holds and run along the rocky coastline west of the village towards Shell Bay caravan park.
