Lisa’s funky facemasks are helping keep people safe in Blairgowrie

A fashion designer is creating funky facemasks to help protect community volunteers in her east Perthshire town.

Lisa Cunningham is spending lockdown making brightly coloured PPE, using old clothing and patterned materials.

The former Blairgowrie High pupil, who studied fashion for two years at Gray’s School of Art, is offering the masks to local volunteers who are working to support hard-pressed families and vulnerable elderly people.

Lisa, who is now a ski instructor in Austria, said: “I still had a lot of material from art school and little bits and pieces picked up from my grandparents and friends.

Some of the facemasks that she has made.

“I also like the idea of upcylcing clothing, so using cotton shirts that are no longer used, but in good condition, seemed like a good way to do that.”

Lisa said she has seen a surge in interest in homemade masks. “I think people are very aware of the fact that masks will help stop the spread of the virus, especially when you find yourself in a situation where social distancing is hard to adhere to.”

Facemasks, made with a soft wire so that the wearer can make adjustments, have been provided to the local Bowls of Help service – set up at Blairgowrie Bowling Club – and the local foodbank.
