John Potter lists reasons behind Kelty Hearts’ turnaround ahead of trip to Dunfermline

Kelty boss John Potter
Kelty Hearts manager John Potter.

John Potter held a chat with his players after the 2-0 defeat to FC Edinburgh in what was a “really, really poor game” for Kelty Hearts.

The Maroon Machine have since won three out of three, including picking up their first points on the road this season last week at Falkirk.

Now Potter’s charges are preparing to make the short trip to East End Park to take on the league leaders.

Earlier in the season Kelty would start matches well and, more often than not, lose.

Importance of first goal

Courier Sport detailed some of the reasons behind their resurgence and then caught up with Potter for his thoughts.

“I think the first goal is vital in a lot of games,” said Potter.

“After the FC Edinburgh game we had a chat because it was a really, really poor game from us.

“I then went back and watched quite a few of the games that we played earlier in the season.

“We actually in the main played pretty well in games but lost all those games.

“We didn’t take our chances, didn’t score.

“We tried to go back to what we were doing – goals are important in games.

“We’ve managed to get a few clean sheets.”

Fuller squad

The former Pars defender has also managed to bring in quality like Darren Lyon, Jason Thomson and Nicky Low – and welcome back players from injury.

Potter has all but one of his players to choose from ahead of the match at East End Park.

Potter said his side held talks following the defeat to FC Edinburgh.

“We’ve now got a bigger squad,” he said.

“We’ve got most people back fit. It’s been a really stop-start season for a lot of players so far.

“Reults have been good, performances have been pretty good in the main.

“There’s still things we want to improve – but we need to keep it going and continue it.”
