Another tough test for Montrose boss Stewart Petrie’s depleted squad

Montrose's Matty Allan.
Montrose's Matty Allan.

It certainly does not get any easier for Montrose boss Stewart Petrie and his depleted squad with another testing Betfred Cup tie against Premiership opposition looming large for the second time in just four days.

The Gable Endies suffered a 4-0 defeat at Easter Road on Saturday, having no answer to Neil Lennon’s slick Hibs outfit.

The Angus side’s squad was stretched to the limit and will be once again for tonight’s tie at Links Park against Ross County.

Petrie said: “It was a tough, tough game against Hibs but we didn’t expect anything different.

“They are a really good side and although we would have liked a better result, it was still a good fitness exercise for us.

“The lads showed a lot of effort and thankfully we came through without any further injuries which was a bonus.

“Ryan Ferguson, Jamie Redman and Danny Cavanagh are still struggling but Matty Allan might play on Tuesday night.
“We will not be taking any chances with him though. We always intended on using these four Betfred matches to give the whole squad game time.

“Expecting the lads to play four 90 minutes in 11 days at this stage of the season is a huge ask.

“We now have another tie against Ross County to look forward to.

“Playing two good Premier League sides back to back is not ideal but thankfully the game is at home and we will look to give a good account of ourselves.”
