Raith boss Barry Smith misses out on loan player with funds diverted to pay medical bills

Raith boss Barry Smith’s plans to draft in a defender have been scuppered after the Kirkcaldy club had to use the funds earmarked for a reinforcement on medical bills.

The Stark’s boss was close to securing a loan for an unnamed centre-half to provide cover for the injured Kyle Benedictus.

However, the plug had to be pulled on the deal when the club had to cough up for operations costing around £7,500 to the two Kevins, McHattie and Cuthbert.

That means midfielder Scott Robertson will have to continue to fill in at the centre of defence when table-topping Raith travel to play Albion Rovers on Saturday.

Smith said: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the funds are no longer there to bring someone else in.

“But the guys are doing very well. We have had to rejig things with Scott Robertson going in at centre-back and doing very well.

“Ideally, you want your players in their proper position.

“So we will keep trying and see if there’s anyone who is available who we can get for nothing or a trialist.

“However, the good thing for us is that we are still winning and putting in good performances.”
