Montrose boss Stewart Petrie waiting for answer from goalie signing target

Montrose boss Stewart Petrie is waiting to hear back from a keeper he has pinpointed as the man to provide competition for No.1 stopper at the club Allan Fleming.

The manager already has the majority of his squad in place for the coming season but he is on the look-out for up to three new players with the goalie position a priority.

Whoever does come in will be training under the watchful eye of Tony Bullock who joined the club as keeper coach earlier this week as successor to Jim Butter who has left the club.

Bullock is someone Petrie knows well having played with him at Ross County with the pair also being on the same coaching team when they were previously at Arbroath.

The keeper has been coaching recently at local junior side Broughty Athletic and turned out for the Fed on Saturday at the ripe old age of 47 against Carnoustie.

However, Petrie insisted Bullock will not be appearing between the sticks for Montrose.

The manager said: “Tony has come in which is great. He will take over the goalies and he has bags of experience just like Jim has.

“So it should be quite a seamless process with Tony coming in to take over Jim’s job.

“He has worked with me before as well so he knows what we are chasing.

“I actually went to see him play for Broughty on Saturday but he had to come off injured in the first half.

“However, he won’t be playing for us! Instead, we are looking for a second goalie to challenge Allan and we are working on that.”

Petrie added: “I spoke to a keeper earlier this week so we are just waiting to hear back from him.

“But apart from that, we are sitting tight just now waiting to see what comes available as we are in the fortunate positon where we don’t need a lot of players.

“We have earmarked three at this moment in time and that’s all we are looking for.”

A space in the Montrose squad has opened up following the departure of midfielder Jamie Redman to League 2 newcomers Cove Rangers.

Petrie added: “Jamie goes with our best wishes to Cove.

“It is a great move for Cove and Jamie. His game time was a wee bit limited for us starting wise.

“He is also an Aberdeen lad so it cuts down a lot on his travelling as well.

“So it made total sense for him.”
