Stevie Campbell is hoping that a bleak week for Brechin will end on a positive note when they travel through to Cliftonhill to face Albion Rovers today.
The Angus club parted company with boss Barry Smith on Monday night by mutual agreement after losing their opening three League 2 fixtures.
Last weekend’s 3-0 defeat to Queen’s Park at the Glebe was final game of Smith’s tenure with his assistant Campbell appointed as caretaker manager.
It is understood the 51-year-old will not be applying for the post on a permanent basis.
However, while the club have started the process of finding a new manager behind the scenes, Campbell is just fully focused on the game in Coatbridge.
And he would like nothing better than to get a positive result for the club, their fans and his good pal Smith.
Campbell said: “I took training on Tuesday night and the guys were gutted that Barry had gone.
“I explained to them what had happened.
“They were understandably down because the manager had gone out of his way to sign most of them.
“I had seen a lot of positivity up until Saturday’s game when the players were poor and they know that.
“But I took training again on Thursday and there was a reaction from them. I just said to them they need to put all this behind them, go out on Saturday and do the best for themselves and the club.
“They are good professionals although it will be tough going down to Albion Rovers who are rejuvenated under Kevin Harper.
“We know how difficult it will be but if it is going to be my last game, then I am determined we will pick up a result at Albion Rovers.
“And I know and the players know that we have Barry Smith 100% behind us.”
This is the second time Campbell has been caretaker boss, having previously filled the role when Darren Dods left the club.
Dods had taken Brechin up to the Championship but the Angus outfit have been on a downward spiral ever since with relegations in successive seasons.
However, Campbell is confident that whoever is appointed as the new Glebe gaffer will inherit a squad capable of making this season a success.
He added: “I think from Brechin’s point of view, they need to make sure they get the right appointment and hopefully if they do that, then the only way will be up.”
