Dundee’s dynamic duo Greg Stewart and Kane Hemmings are good mates on and off the pitch

They may not have a clue when it comes to cooking Christmas dinner but Greg Stewart and Kane Hemmings certainly have the recipe for success on the pitch.

The dynamic Dundee duo were in great form once again on Saturday at Firhill with the latter netting the Dark Blues’ opener against Partick Thistle.

Then late on, his good mate turned provider to set up Hemmings to secure all three points for Paul Hartley’s side with what was his 25th goal of this incredibly-prolific season.

The pair first played together when they were part-timers at Cowdenbeath with Stewart admitting he was not sure if their paths would cross again after they left the Blue Brazil.

However, they were reunited at Dens and they are now good friends on and off the pitch with Hemmings even spending Christmas with the Stewart family.

Stewart said: “It just keeps happening with me and Kane.

“The first thing I think when I get the ball is to try and look for him.

“He knows where I am going to put it and I know where he’s going to put it.

“You don’t know it is going to be this good when you are playing for Cowdenbeath.

“I might never have seen him again after that but the combination play between us is something we have kept going.

“It comes naturally, we don’t work on it – it just seems to click.

“I am delighted that he has managed to score another two goals to get up to 25 for the season.

“We are good mates off the pitch as well.

“We go out and do things together. He came to my house for Christmas dinner which was cooked my missus’ mum.

“We don’t get involved in the cooking, we just eat it!

“He’s obviously up here himself and his family is back down south so yes, we are great friends off the pitch as well.”

It is no great surprise that considering what the duo have achieved in dark blue, intense speculation has surrounded their futures.

Hartley revealed on Saturday that early talks had begun with Stewart about a new deal although the player himself cautioned that: “I have not been offered one as far as I know.”

However, what is certain is that Stewart and 25-goal Hemmings will definitely be on the radar of other clubs.

Stewart added: “There have been a few stories kicking about but I just want to keep improving as a player and do the best I can, playing at the highest level I can.

“Whether that’s at Dundee, I don’t know but I just want to keep doing my best for the club I am signed for.

“When you are enjoying your football, that’s when you are at your best.

“I am enjoying it just now at Dundee but you never know in football. That’s all I can say to that, you never know what might happen.”
