Dundee assistant boss Gerry McCabe looking for big boost from Killie game

Dundee assistant manager Gerry McCabe admits a win over Kilmarnock at Dens tomorrow would be a big boost for a whole host of important reasons.

The Dark Blues will take the field knowing that a victory would take them up into the top six of the Premiership.

Securing a priceless three points would, of course, also increase the gap between Paul Hartley’s side and the bottom two.

And McCabe believes climbing the table would also be a big psychological boost for the players.

He said: “The league is so tight, if we win on Saturday, we get into the top six.

“It is a big opportunity with the rest of the teams involved in the Scottish Cup.

“Climbing one or two places would be good psychologically as well.

“So it is a massive game for us and hopefully we can win, get into the top six and take it from there.”

Hartley has a full squad to choose from for the Killie game including Kosta Gadzhalov who missed out against Inverness last week.

However, McCabe revealed the Bulgarian defender was absent because of tactical reasons rather than injury.

He said: “Everybody is fit and available so we have a full squad to choose from, which is pleasing.

“A few games ago we were short of numbers on the bench but we have a few back now and it is looking a lot healthier.

“Kosta Gadzhalov wasn’t involved last week as the manager decided to go with more attacking options on the bench.”

Meanwhile, McCabe also revealed that first-team regular Craig Wighton asked to play for the club’s development side earlier this week.

The teenager was an unused sub against Inverness so was desperate to play against St Johnstone Under-20s at Station Park on Tuesday with Wighton netting two of the side’s goals in a 3-1 win.

He said: “Craig actually asked to play in the game.

“We know what Craig is all about, the talent he possesses and he took his goals well.

“By his own admission, he could have scored a couple more.

“But he did really well and he wants to play football.

“Craig is still learning but when he plays for the Under-20s, he gives you the same attitude as when he is in the first team.

“He has the same mentality and wants to score goals – that’s Craig.”
