Blair Alston confident of scoring goals for St Johnstone

Blair Alston celebrates a goal for Falkirk.

Blair Alston made his name as a goal-scoring midfielder at Falkirk.

And the St Johnstone new boy believes he can hold on to that reputation in the Scottish Premiership.

Alston, who met his Saints team-mates yesterday on the squad’s return for pre-season training, scored 12 times for the Bairns in a campaign that nearly won them promotion.

“I’ve always been more of an attacking midfielder so I’ll be looking to get forward and find the back of the net,” he said. “I’m sure I’ll get the opportunities to do that here.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to score some goals in big games and had a lot of great experiences playing against high-quality opposition. It will be good to test myself now week in, week out.

“I’ve scored some good ones recently, so I’ll be hoping to get a few of those during the season.

“I think the team will set some targets over the next few weeks. But individually I just want to play as much as I can and contribute as much as possible.”

Day one of life as a St Johnstone player went well for Alston.

“Everyone has been really nice and it’s good to get the first session out of the way,” he said. “It was nice to get to know everyone because it’s been a long time since I actually signed for the club.

“It was quite nerve-wracking but the guys have been chatting away to help me settle in. Everyone seems to get on at this club. I’m enjoying it so far and I’m sure when I get to know everyone more it will be even easier.

Alston added: “It was always going to be difficult to leave Falkirk at any point but I knew there was an opportunity for me to test myself at a higher level.

“It’s the same in any walk of life, if you leave a job you’ve been at for a long time then it’s going to be difficult. But it’s certainly something I’m more excited about than nervous.

“Every player will tell you that they want to play at the highest level they can. I had a few offers but chose to come here. I think it’s somewhere I can grow as a player.

“The team has been brilliant over the last few years so hopefully I can add to that and help maintain and improve the league finishes we’ve been getting.”
