Rangers 1 St Johnstone 1: Super Saints secure well-earned point at Ibrox

St Johnstone moved up to third in the Premiership table thanks to this impressive 1-1 draw against Rangers at Ibrox.

St Johnstone opened the scoring with an absolute cracker from Blair Alston but Rangers equalised through Joe Garner.

Both sides had chances in the second half but neither team could make the breakthrough.

It was still a great point for Saints who looked the better side for large periods of the game.

Perth boss Tommy Wright originally made two changes from the team that beat Dundee 2-1 at McDiarmid on Sunday with Alston and Paul Paton coming in for Steven MacLean and David Wotherspoon.

However, Murray Davidson picked up an injury in the warm-up and was replaced by Chris Millar.

The Perth manager bolstered his midfield with Chris Kane ploughing a lone furrow up front and Danny Swanson floating just behind him.

Rangers boss Mark Warburton freshened up his side after Sunday’s League Cup defeat against Celtic with Garner, Harry Forrester, Wes Foderingham and former St Johnstone player Michael O’Halloran being drafted into the starting XI.

The home side had the first chance of the game in just the third minute when Forrester tried his luck from long-range with his dipping and swerving shot forcing Saints keeper Zander Clark to pull off a fine diving save.

However, his opposite number Foderingham was helpless to prevent St Johnstone taking a stunning lead just two minutes later.

Alston picked the pocket of Lee Hodson inside the Rangers penalty area and the former Falkirk man looked up and sent a superb curling shot in from the left high past the home keeper.

It was Alston’s first for the club – and what a way to open his account.

Clark then had to look lively to keep out a Lee Wallace piledriver with his defence coming to the rescue from the resulting corner, blocking a fierce Garner shot.

O’Halloran was the first player to be booked in the 16th minute when he embarked on a trademark pacy run before falling to the turf with referee Kevin Clancy deciding he had made a meal of it and yellow carded him for diving.

Wallace then had a great chance when he burst into the Saints box but he dragged his shot wide when he should have hit the target.

Clark was called into action when Holt sent a thunderbolt in from the edge of the St Johnstone box but the big keeper pulled off another impressive save.

Rangers felt they should have had a penalty in the 33rd minute when Garner tumbled in the Saints area but Mr Clancy saw nothing amiss, much to Warburton’s fury on the touchline.

However, the home boss was celebrating four minutes later as his side equalised. Andy Halliday sent a corner in from the Rangers right, with Garner, who had looked impressive all evening, rising high to bullet a header past Clark from eight yards out.

St Johnstone, though. had been less than impressed with the awarding of the corner with Millar booked for protesting.

Just before half-time, Clark had to make another vital diving save to keep out a ferocious Windass 18-yarder but the sides went down the tunnel with the game delicately poised.

Just three minutes after the restart, the lively Swanson found space on the left of the Rangers box and he almost surprised Foderingham with a snap shot that the keeper had to smartly turn away for a corner.

Saints were more than holding their own with the home fans becoming increasingly impatient and frustrated with their team.

Liam Craig then played a clever square pass to Swanson on the edge of the Rangers penalty area but his shot flew straight into Foderingham’s arms.

Warburton then threw on veteran striker Kenny Miller in an attempt to break the deadlock.

However, it was Garner who had a great chance to score again in the 74th minute when he produced a superb downward header that looked certain to end in the back of the net but Clark made an unbelievable save to deny him.

Shortly after, Saints came mighty close to taking the lead when an Alston shot hit off the outside of Foderingham’s left-hand post.

In the 88th minute Miller was teed up 12 yards out but Saints sub David Wotherspoon put his body on the line to make a superb block and ensure his side held on for their well-earned point.
