Olympic champion Eve Muirhead chatted to the Prince of Wales about curling matches at Balmoral in Scotland as she collected an MBE and OBE at Windsor Castle.
Eve, who won a curling gold medal while captaining Team GB at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, had the honours conferred on her by the Prince of Wales at a Windsor Castle investiture.
The Courier columnist had her MBE upgraded to an OBE in last week‘s Queen’s Birthday Honours list.
The Perthshire curling star said: “It went really well and it was actually a really exciting moment to receive my OBE alongside my MBE. The chance to receive them together was really special.
“And to get the chance to speak to Charles and he knew a lot about curling, which is always nice. It’s a very special day, a lot of great memories.
“He (Charles) just spoke about where I started curling and where I train now and then he spoke a little bit about curling in Balmoral because there is a lot of outside curling up there.
“So he knew a lot about it in terms of Balmoral, obviously they have a lot of connections there, so it was nice that he reflected on that.”
Dundee Minecraft entrepreneur collects CBE
Collecting his CBE, awarded for technology, was Dundee games boss Chris van der Kuyl.
His company, 4J Studios, developed the console versions of Minecraft which sold millions of copies around the world.
His previous accolades include the Outstanding Contribution gong at the 2017 Courier Business Awards.
The CBE was awarded in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2020.
Chris said: “It’s a huge honour to be recognised in this way and to receive the award at Windsor Castle so soon after the platinum jubilee celebrations made it a particularly special experience.
“I am grateful for the wisdom, patience and backing of my family, friends, and business partner Paddy, and that’s why this award is as much for them as it is for me.
“Technology has been at the centre of Dundee’s commercial and creative success for several decades now.
“It remains a source of fascination and inspiration for me, both personally and professionally, so I am proud to have been recognised in that field.
“Scotland has the opportunity to be at the forefront of the technology sector over the next 30 years.
“If we nurture talent by investing in education and skills at all ages and stages, there is a bright future for Scotland as an attractive base for the creation and growth of innovative technology businesses.”
