Competitors at the 87th Arbroath and District Musical Festival were playing to capacity audiences as the event hit the halfway point on Wednesday.

Heavy rain failed to deter the participants and public, with all of the choirs scheduled to perform in full voice.

Andrew Farquharson who was competing in the afternoon events.
Kit Storm who won Violin solo grade 5+ and Class Instrumental Duet.

Organisers expressed delight at the level of support for the performers, with the balcony filled to capacity, and “shuttle runs” being organised to get audience members in and out.

Festival secretary Susan Robertson welcomed the high audience figures, and described some of the performances as “exceptional”.

She said: “The festival has been very, very busy today, with a lot going on in front of really appreciative audiences.

One of the competitors from the Solo Brass group, Raghnall Simmons.

“The competitors have had tremendous support from families, and we’ve heard some genuinely exceptional performances, especially in the brass classes, and of course, this has been reflected in the high scores that we have seen awarded.

“It has also been great to see several scores of 90 + awarded, which ranks a performance as outstanding, and  an exceptional performance both technically and artistically.”

Audiences were treated to a broad range of classes, ranging from advanced drum kit and advanced timpani, to verse speaking choir and dramatised nursery rhyme.

The festival continues until Friday and culminates in a final evening concert, with tickets available from the Webster Memorial Theatre box office.
