A venue for a new post office in Broughty Ferry has been found after a fire forced the closure of the previous unit more than a year ago.
The Barnhill Post Office will re-open in Zaveri newsagent’s shop on Abercromby Street on February 17.
Post Office bosses said they would be working with the store owner to carry out the necessary adaptations to the premises between now and then.
It will mean the town has a second post office again after locals had to manage with just one, in Gray Street, for all of 2019.
Naeem Zaveri, owner of Zaveri Newsagent, said he was looking forward to taking on the new service.
He added: “It’s really exciting to get the post office.
“It will be very helpful for Barnhill, it’s definitely been missed.
“Lots of our customers have said so, and we think it will have a lot of demand.
“It will be good for the community and I’m looking forward to it.”
The news has been welcomed by Broughty Ferry councillor Craig Duncan, who has helped locals campaign for the return of services to the area.
He said: “It’s been more than a year since the old post office closed down and Broughty Ferry only has one other post office, on Gray Street.
“I’m very pleased that the Barnhill branch is re-opening.
“I think the new location will be just fine, as most people in Broughty Ferry know where Zaveri’s is and it’s easily accessible.
“I have pushed for this re-opening since the old service closed down but the problem is that there isn’t a long queue of people wanting to be postmasters and postmistresses.
“Thankfully they have now finally found somebody.”
Broughty Ferry was left with a depleted service following the blaze at MS News in Campfield Square on October 31 2018.
The branch on Gray Street was said to be difficult to access for people with mobility issues who lived some distance away.
A statement from the Post Office said: “We are delighted to let you know that following the temporary closure of Barnhill Post Office we will be re-opening the branch on February 17.
“Customers would access Post Office services at a low-screened, open-plan, modern serving point that’s part of the retail counter.
“Working with the postmaster, we’d adapt the current store layout, fixtures and fittings to accommodate the Post Office till if needed.
“The branch will offer a wide range of Post Office products and services over longer opening hours, so customers can access their Post Office when it’s convenient.”
