A 32-year old driver has been charged by police after an early morning collision between a car and an ambulance.

The incident happened at about 4.20am on January 19 at the junction of Victoria Street and Brown Constable Street.

The ambulance was not carrying any patients at the time and nobody was seriously injured as a result of the crash.

The man was arrested at the scene, but was later released on an undertaking to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court on a future date.

Nearby resident Matthew Robb was laying in bed when he heard a “huge screeching sound” from outside.

He said: “It (the ambulance) sat there for a while with smoke coming out of it.

“Police arrived pretty quickly and sealed a large part of the road off and started to clear everything up.”

A driver passing the scene said debris was still being cleared up at about 7am on the Sunday morning.

A police spokesman said: “Around 4.25am police attended a report of a two-vehicle road crash involving a car and an ambulance on Brown Constable Street at its junction with Victoria Street, in Dundee.

“No one was injured and the 32-year old male driver of the car was arrested at the scene and will be reported to the procurator fiscal in connection with road traffic offences.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “At around 4.20am an emergency ambulance was involved in a road traffic collision with a car at a junction near Victoria Street, Dundee.

“The ambulance was not conveying a patient at the time and we are working with Police Scotland to help with their investigation into the cause of the collision.”

Fire engines also attended to assist the clear up.
