Major search operation launched on River Tay in early hours of Sunday morning

A major search operation was launched on the River Tay in the early hours of Sunday morning following concerns for a man.

Police, a coastguard helicopter, and lifeboats were called to the Tay Road Bridge area around 3am on Sunday.

Two lifeboats were launched from the Broughty Ferry station at 3.03am and it is understood they resumed their search at 11.25am.

The search and rescue helicopter was called from Prestwick Airport.

Police say they have not located the man but enquires are ongoing to trace him.

Coastguard called to assist police

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 2.55am on Sunday, police received a report of concern for a man on the Tay Road Bridge.

“A search was carried out, with the assistance of helicopter and coastguard, but there was no trace.

“Enquiries to trace the man remain ongoing.”

A spokesperson for the Coastguard also confirmed they were called to assist police on Sunday morning.

He said: “It was to support a police incident regarding a person in the water.

“They are the lead agency on this incident.”
