One of Dundee’s longest-established bakery stores is to shut next month.
Goodfellow & Steven will close its Albert Street outlet after 45 years of business.
The firm will continue trading at its 12 other shops in the area, including Broughty Ferry and Barnhill.
Martin Goodfellow, sales and marketing director for the company, says trade at the Stobswell outlet has not recovered from the impact of the Covid pandemic.
He told The Courier he has fond memories of the shop opening in the 1970s.
He said: “I remember handing out flyers when we opened and going around the local houses as a youngster.
“It was a great community shop but it’s not recovered since Covid and the lease is due to expire in April.
“I wish I could put my finger on why this particular store hasn’t recovered like the others but I can’t.
“We could look at this through rose-tinted spectacles of how long the shop has been here but we did not believe the fortunes were going to change.”
The last day of trading for the Goodfellow & Steven branch is on April 1.
Mr Goodfellow says no jobs will be affected by the closure with staff being redeployed.
‘Emotional’ end for Albert Street bakery
He added: “It will be emotional when this store closes for the final time both for myself and the staff.
“The staff will be moving to other premises – they’ve been fantastic servants to the local community.
“Forty-five years is a long time. Many of our customers have been with us throughout and our passion has always been to serve the community.
“We continue to supply to our other 12 shops on a daily basis, as well as a seven-day supply of rolls to branded bakery counters in over 50 convenience stores from Stonehaven to Prestonpans.”
It follows news of a number of other retail closures in Dundee, including a Farmfoods shop in the city centre.
