Dundee City Council has warned locals to “be prepared” on roads and pavements after plummeting temperatures were forecast for the weekend.
The mercury is expected to drop to as low as -10C in rural parts of Tayside into Saturday morning, with the cold spell due to endure into Sunday.
And the Met Office has issued a yellow warning of ice for the whole of Tayside and Fife from Friday into Saturday, warning it could form on roads, pavements and cycle paths.
Dundee City Council has told locals to “be prepared” on Saturday and Sunday, adding that gritting crews will be out in force across the weekend.
The local authority said its teams will be “out across the city, covering hundreds of kilometres of roads and footways”. Surfaces may be treated more than once.
Deputy convener of the council’s community safety and public protection committee, SNP councillor Anne Rendall, said: “As the icy weather approaches, I would urge you to be prepared, be careful and be patient.
“Already this winter we have experienced difficult underfoot conditions caused by icy weather, which has posed additional challenges for social care services and our colleagues in the NHS.
“As a community it’s important that we come together and help each other, so please check on your elderly and vulnerable neighbours to see if they need helping getting medicines, food or care.
“If you are going out on foot, take care as pavements may be slippery. And I would urge drivers to be mindful of the conditions.”
She added that there are more than 750 grit bins across Dundee.
