DVSA pledge to accelerate driving test delays for Dundee learners after Monifieth teen’s three-month hold-up

Driving examination chiefs have said they are aiming to speed up the length of time Dundee learners have to wait to sit their test.

The waiting list for a practical test in the city is almost three months.

Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency bosses said they were trying to recruit additional examiners in an effort to reduce the wait, and suggested L drivers look further afield for a test if they want to speed up the process in the meantime.

The delays have been highlighted by a Monifieth dad whose son recently failed his test, but had hoped to book a quick resit.

“He was obviously disappointed at failing his test, but wanted to get back on with it and the examiner advised him to book another test as soon as he could,” said the man.

“You can’t resit within 10 days, but he went straight home and went online, only to find that the earliest available date was three months’ away.

“To go through a test in August and then log on and be told the first available date is November isn’t really on.”

He said the cancellation list was also frustrating for people to negotiate.

“It’s a live list so you just have to keep checking for availability and try to jump into the cancellation slot,” said the dad.

“That’s okay if you have the time to sit on the DVSA site all the time, but it’s complete luck of the draw if you manage to bag a cancellation.”

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency said it was trying to boost examiner numbers to bring down the time it takes to get a test slot.

“DVSA’s priority is to help everyone through a lifetime of safe driving,” said a spokesperson.

“Dundee driving test centre is looking to bring in additional staff with a view to providing more test slots and reducing the current waiting time.

“Drivers who are ready for test may wish to use Perth driving test centre, where the waiting time is six weeks.”

The Perth wait was slashed earlier this summer after local instructors complained about an 11-week wait facing pupils.

DVSA increase out of hours testing and brought in an additional examiner during normal hours to bring down the list.
