A former Dundee man and his wife are seeking a marriage annulment after the couple both realised they were gay.
Scott Turner-Smith, 25 and Jo Turner, 30, wed in August 2018, but have since filed a nullity petition, citing “invalid consent by mistake”.
However, the couple have insisted they will continue to enjoy nights out together, along with Jo’s new girlfriend Wendy Rennie.
Scott, who is originally from Dundee, said coming out was a “freeing” experience as he shared the news on social media.
Posting on Twitter, he said: “I’ve composed and deleted this tweet a thousand times, but here it goes: I’m gay.”
Scott, who moved to Rochdale to be with Jo and went on to stand as a Conservative candidate in the borough’s council elections earlier this year, added: “Those I’ve told so far have been wonderful, and for that I’m more grateful than they know.
“It feels freeing to be able to be my whole self, and I’m excited to find out what’s next.”
Dentist Jo tweeted: “We have had a hoot when signing the nullity petition today – ‘invalid consent by mistake – turns out we’re both gay’.
“Enjoy that, Judge. The screenplay will be out next year.”
Wendy, a junior doctor, also shared her story of meeting Jo two years ago when they were working in a hospital.
She said she got “butterflies to the max” but remained friends as she had to “watch Jo move on with her life and get married to a man human.”
Circumstances changed when Jo got in touch suggesting they go for drinks.
Wendy said: “It may just take two years but my God is she worth it.”
The trio announced they will continue to enjoy nights out together and even joked about double dating and a joint wedding – so long as Scott can find a boyfriend in time.
Messages poured in for the couple on social media congratulating them on their news.
