A 17-year-old woman was taken hospital after being assaulted at Glenrothes bus station.
Police were called to the area shortly after 7pm on Friday following reports of the attack.
The teenager was taken to hospital for treatment, however the extent of her injuries is not known.
The assault comes amid rising concern about persistent anti-social behaviour at the bus station, with reports on social media detailing large groups of youths frequenting the area.
Police previously stepped up patrols
In November last year, officers in the Fife town announced they would be carrying out “high visibility patrols” at the station in an effort to tackle youth disorder, saying the behaviour – including the abuse of staff – would not be tolerated.
Other measures, including switching off the Wi-Fi at the station, have also been taken in a bid to deter the youths.
But Councillor Jan Wincott, who represents the Glenrothes North, Leslie and Markinch ward, admits officers are faced with a difficult situation.
She said: “I am aware of what has been happening and it’s totally unacceptable .
“We do need a resolution to this and I know the police are being very active but it’s difficult.
“I think kids are going there because there’s not a lot for them to do in Glenrothes.
“But I don’t think we are alone in experiencing this behaviour, I’ve heard it happening in other places too.
“People should not be afraid to travel on the bus and if you do see this kind of behaviour, report it immediately.”
Councillor Peter Gulline, who represents the same ward, said: “This behaviour has been going for a while, since well before Christmas.
“The police are getting a bad press on social media but they are doing their best. There’s not much they can do with limited resources.”
Police investigation
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We received a report of an assault around 7.10pm on Friday at Glenrothes bus station.
“A 17-year-old female was taken to hospital for treatment.
“Inquiries are ongoing.”
Fife Council has been approached for comment.
