Forfar Athletic have appointed former Dundee United boss Ray McKinnon as their new manager.

McKinnon will replace recently sacked Gary Irvine on a rolling contract through to May, 2025 with a clear first task – keeping the bottom of League Two Angus side in the SPFL.

The 52-year-old’s last managerial position was with Queen’s Park, who he left in the summer of 2021 after guiding them out of the division Forfar are currently propping up.

McKinnon has spent the time away from football making a full recovery from a minor heart attack.

A Forfar statement said: “He has been considering a return to the game in a managerial capacity over the past few months and it goes without saying that ‘Loons’ officials are delighted to have obtained the services of such an experienced coach and manager so quickly following the departure of Gary Irvine to hopefully lead them away from the lower reaches that they currently occupy in the league table.”

McKinnon has been a success in the dug-out with Brechin City and Raith Rovers and narrowly failed to take United back into the Premiership through the play-offs.

He has also been in charge of Morton and Falkirk.

An assistant manager has yet to be appointed and McKinnon will oversee his first training session tonight as preparations begin for Saturday’s visit of Bonnyrigg Rose.
