Team spirits helps take Montrose to the top of the table

It was over 20 years ago that Montrose were last top of the league this far into a season.

And midfielder Martyn Fotheringham believes the blend between young and old in the Links Park squad has been key to their impressive League Two form.

The former Forfar veteran said: “There is a great bunch of boys here and we’ve got a good team spirit.

“It’s not as if we’re blowing teams away but we don’t give much away and we know how to see out a game when we’re a goal ahead.

“We’ve had quite a lot of 1-0s (four in the league) and looked quite comfortable in most of them.

“It’s a credit to the manager that we’re managing games as well.

“There’s a good mix of youth and experienced boys.

“Everybody’s buying into the fact that it’s a squad game.”

Montrose boss Stewart Petrie was on Dick Campbell’s coaching staff and Fotheringham can see the link between the two managers.

He explained: “The gaffer has worked under Dick and he knows how important it is to have a good mix of experience and youth.

“It’s early days but there’s certainly something good here.

“I’m sure it will change a few times at the top but if we can stay up there in contention for the whole season that will be good progress and we can see what happens from there.”
