A prominent local businessman is heading a consortium considering a shock Dundee United takeover bid.
The Tannadice outfit are currently under the ownership of Mark Ogren following his purchase from Stephen Thompson in 2018.
Despite the Tangerines’ on-field travails this term, Ogren recently reaffirmed his commitment to the club at their AGM.
Nevertheless, he did emphasise the need for United to be self-sustainable and, amid a challenging financial climate, he could be open to talks with a viable buyer.
And, although the interest is exploratory at the moment, that option could come from a Dundee-based entrepreneur who is reluctant to be named at this juncture.
He told The Courier: “It’s no secret among people who know me that it’s always something I was interested in.
“At the moment, it’s Mark Ogren’s club but it (talk of a takeover) is not something that’s just come from rumours.
“(We are) waiting to hear from a couple of other interested people and we’ll just have to see how the numbers stack up. But the rumours haven’t come from nothing.”
Ogren’s journey
Ogren’s tenure has been a largely successful one, overseeing a rise from the Championship to European qualification last term.
He has invested around £13 million in the club during his time at Tannadice, including — as per the accounts for the year ending June 2022 — an interest free loan of £9,339,576.
Sporting director Tony Asghar has been largely trusted with compiling an executive team and taking overseeing the running of the club in that time.
United are currently at the bottom of the Premiership, four points adrift, and searching for their third manager of the 2022/23 campaign.
The club are keen to tempt former boss Craig Levein back to Tannadice.
The Courier approached United for comment.
