The CityFibre works in Dundee are expected to continue into 2024.

Broadband works that have gone on for two years in Dundee have now laid 350 kilometres of full fibre cabling.

CityFibre is investment £40 million into the new network in the city.

Laying the extensive underground work has caused upset among traders and roadworks for motorists.

Allan McEwan, CityFibre’s area manager for Dundee, stressed the scale of the work involved.

He said: “The last two years we have been working to bring our full fibre network to Dundee.

“With our infrastructure being underground, it can be difficult to get a true idea of the scale of the build.

“However, the idea that our fibre cabling could now stretch almost double the length of the River Tay (193km) gives some idea of the amount of work now complete.”

Work has been completed in Ardler, Balgowan, Brackens, Charleston, Downfield, Dryburgh, Fairmuir, Gowrie Park, Kirkton, Law, Maryfield, Menzieshill, St Mary’s, West End and Woodside.

The CityFibre network is being utilised by local firm FibreCast and TalkTalk. They are offering customers download speeds of up to 900Mbps, more than 10 times the UK average.

Prices through Fibrecast range from £24 to £49.

Other providers, including CityFibre’s launch partner Vodafone, are expected to join the local network soon.

Mr McEwan adds: “We are pleased that many communities across Dundee are now enjoying the benefits of our network. We want to thank them for their support over the last two years.

“Our team continues to work hard to rollout to even more of the city.”

Dundee is among a growing number of locations in the UK to benefit from CityFibre’s nationwide full fibre rollout.

The company wants to serve a third of the UK by 2025. This is eight million homes, 800,000 businesses, 400,000 local authority sites and 250,000 5G access points.
