Craig Kennedy is accused of approaching women outside Perth's Bee Bar.
Craig Kennedy is accused of approaching women outside Perth's Bee Bar.

A man has appeared in court accused of menacing strangers and making “alarming noises” at locations in Perth.

Craig Kennedy has been charged with six counts of breach of the peace.

The 34-year-old denied all allegations when he appeared from custody at Perth Sheriff Court on Monday.

He was released on bail with a trial set for May.

Allegations

Kennedy, of St Catherine’s Square, is accused of conducting himself in a disorderly manner by loitering outside the Bee Bar on South Methven Street on November 22, last year.

It is alleged he repeatedly approached two women and uttered threats of violence towards another man.

He is further accused of returning to the same area two days later.

Prosecutors allege he approached one of the women again and made “alarming remarks towards her”.

A third charge alleges between December 10 and 20, he again loitered outside the Bee Bar, stared at and approached the other of the two women and uttered sexually explicit remarks.

Kennedy is further accused of conducting himself in a disorderly manner at King’s Place, Perth – between the train station and the South Inch – and jumping in front of a third woman.

It is alleged he shouted, “uttered alarming noises” and behaved in an aggressive manner towards her on January 5 this year.

Prosecutors also claim Kennedy adopted a menacing demeanour and repeatedly stared at a fourth woman at the AK Bell Library, York Place, on January 12.

It is alleged that on Saturday, Kennedy again conducted himself in a disorderly manner at the Scouring Burn, Oakbank.

He is accused of adopting a menacing demeanour, approaching a man and uttering “alarming noises”.

Bail conditions

A solicitor for Kennedy tendered not guilty pleas to each charge during the brief custody hearing.

Asking for his client to be released on bail, he said: “It is unusual to see six breach of the peace allegations but that shouldn’t justify remand.”

Sheriff James MacDonald told Kennedy: “I am minded to grant bail in this case.”

Perth Sheriff Court.

He declined to impose special bail conditions banning Kennedy from approaching or contacting any of the five complainers “given that it is accepted they were all strangers to you at the time.”

A trial was set for May 22, with an intermediate hearing on May 4.

As part of his bail conditions, Kennedy must meantime stay away from the Bee Bar and the AK Bell Library.

He must also stay at home between 7pm and 7am.
